ALEXANDROS was founded as a non-lucrative association in February 2005 on the initiative of 6 local unions of municipalities and communes from Chalkidiki, Imathia, Kilkis, Pella, Pieria and Serres. The total area covered by the 83 municipalities and 6 communes that constitute the Union, is inhabited by 800,000 people.

The basic aim of ALEXANDROS is to assist the local authorities of Central Macedonia in meeting the demands of a modern regional policy with a European dimension and to transmit information concerning the European policies and the decisions of the European Institutions.

The mission of the Union is to support cooperation with similar organizations from all over the European Union and to implement projects that will promote development in many fields such as social and economic policy, integration of specific groups of population, unemployment, culture and protection of the environment.
