We are a part of Uppsala City’s work with immigrants and refugees. The municipality of Uppsala is one of the local partners that cooperate with The National Board of Migration, handling the asylum processes, the refugee camps as well as the negotiations with the local authorities in order to find a final setting for the newly arrived. Thus, Uppsala city has a special unit for these contacts on national and regional level. Its task is to introduce refugees and immigrants in the Uppsala municipality and the Swedish society. This includes housing, education, language courses, and preparation for the labour market. It is an obligation for every newcomer to receive special economic benefits from the state, in order to take part in SFI - Swedish for immigrants and labour market related training.

Our unit, Unit for strategic development, is on an over arching municipality level, where the system of receiving refugees and immigrants is only one aspect. Our task is to contribute to the promotion of cooperation, coordination and synergy all over the municipality. By this we represent a larger framework to the issues of short term introduction and the processes of long term integration. Together with other strategic units our aim is to ensure the planning and the development of a sustainable society, according to the visions and the directives of the politicians, where pluralism is considered as a creative and decisive factor.
